Broadway to Dim Lights in Honor of Gore Vidal, Late Writer of The Best Man

Broadway theaters will dim their lights for one minute at 8PM on August 3 in the memory of celebrated writer Gore Vidal, who passed away at his home in Los Angeles on July 31. He was 86.

Vidal’s play The Best Man is currently being revived at Broadway’s Schoenfeld Theatre. His plays A Visit to a Small Planet, Weekend and An Evening With Richard Nixon and… also appeared on Broadway. On the big screen, Vidal adapted Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer, served as a script doctor on Ben Hur, and wrote screenplays for A Catered Affair, Caligula, and the film adaptation of his novel Myra Breckinridge. He wrote an Emmy-nominated script for the TV movie Dress Gray. Vidal appeared in animated form on TV’s The Simpsons and Family Guy, and in the 1960 film adaptation of his play The Best Man. For a more complete obituary, click here.

“For over six decades, Gore Vidal never stopped writing novels, memoirs, plays, essays and screenplays, and was a ubiquitous cultural commentator,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League said in a statement. “His plays were timely and timeless, as evidenced by the current production of The Best Man now playing on Broadway. Our thoughts go out to his friends, family, and fans.”
